Global capital markets have taken a decided turn for the worse. In response to the recent shutdown of several key US financial corporations, credit markets have frozen worldwide. Despite a multitude of government bailouts and interventions in the US, Europe, and elsewhere, measures thus far have been unsuccessful in restoring confidence in the battered financial system. The global economy was floundering before and will now be pushed into a full-blown recession.

In the equity market, in the United States the quarter was dominated by credit market woes, with US equities falling 8.4%, enduring their fourth consecutive quarterly loss. After a flat July and modest gains in August, US equity markets fell sharply in September as credit markets deteriorated further and market volatility reached record levels.
